ONA

A Design Statement Bridging Mallorca & Venice at Time Space Existence 2025

A Wave Reimagined as a Modular Bench Exploring New Possibilities for Inhabiting Public Space

ONA is a piece of urban furniture designed by GRAS Reynés Arquitectos for the international exhibition Time Space Existence, held as part of the Venice Architecture Biennale. The project is inspired by the Mediterranean, a shared landscape between Mallorca and Venice. It establishes a bond between the two regions through a continuous, fluid form. Developed in close collaboration with Huguet Mallorca and sponsored by Camper, the installation responds to the curatorial theme of this edition, Repair, Regenerate, Reuse, by incorporating recycled terrazzo and locally rooted production methods.

An Homage to the Mediterranean Through Form & Movement

We designed ONA (wave in Catalan) as a tribute to the shared natural heritage of the Mediterranean, linking Mallorca and Venice through a language of fluid and moving forms. Our design is inspired by the essence of the wave: infinite, dynamic and adaptable, as a symbol of connection through water, connecting our roots in Mallorca to the vibrant context of the Venice Biennale.

Mallorca and Venice share a history deeply tied to the sea, trade, and architecture linked to water. ONA acts as a symbol of this connection, establishing a dialogue between both territories through its form and concept. While serving a practical purpose, ONA also encourages reflection on the relationship between people, their environment, and the materials that shape it.

A Modular, Evolving System Tailored to Contemporary Public Space

Formally minimalist and functionally versatile, ONA offers a modular design system capable of adapting to diverse spatial configurations. The bench comprises a series of fluid, interlocking units that may be recombined to generate linear or open-ended compositions, allowing for continuous extensions tailored to specific urban contexts.

Architecturally driven and ergonomically resolved, the design reconciles sculptural presence with tactile comfort. It achieves a careful equilibrium between aesthetics and performance, offering stability within a system conceived to evolve and adapt across time and place.

Recycled Materials, Modularity & Local Collaboration

At its core, ONA is a manifesto for sustainable design. Crafted entirely from recycled terrazzo, the bench anchors itself in ecological responsibility while maintaining a visual conversation with its Mediterranean origins. Its production, entrusted to the craftsmanship of Huguet Mallorca, embodies a synergy between tradition and innovation, reinforcing the exhibition’s emphasis on circularity, repair, and regeneration.

By integrating regional knowledgeand contemporary environmental challenges, ONA becomes more than an object, it stands as a call to action. Camper’s support as a sponsor ensures the viability of this vision, enabling the materialization of a project where architectural intent, ecological awareness, and cultural memory converge.
