GRAS Reynés Architects Studio: rooted in Mediterranean values of Mallorca

The discipline of architecture has a universal language that requires the local, the traditional. At GRAS Reynés Arquitectos we always try to create something exceptional in connection with the local context, both in terms of conceptual inspiration and materiality: innovation and diversity without losing a sight of tradition.

Our goal is to transform while being mindful about the context, avoiding the creation of egocentric and decontextualized icons.

Today, sustainability is not an option; it is an obligation. Therefore, GRAS is always aware that architectural design is closely related not only to energy efficiency, but also to sustainability in its fullest sense: social, economic, cultural, and environmental.

We live in a world of limited resources, so rehabilitation is at the centre of our work, giving a second life to obsolete buildings and spaces.

Our projects elevate quality of life and improve the perception of the architect’s role

Our designs aim to raise the quality of life of their users and improve the perception of the architect’s role through an ethical and respectful practice. We work across all scales and programmes, creating places, spaces, and communities on a human scale, regardless of the size of the projects.

The projects developed in our office range from unique single-family homes to multifamily buildings, hotels, commercial buildings, interior design, and planning, without forgetting about rehabilitation. We believe in humanised architecture that focuses on the end user.

Our studio consist of a team of more than twenty professionals whose skills, knowledge, sensitivity, and innovative vision make GRAS capable of meeting the challenges that today’s projects present.

We cannot do it alone, so we approach projects with humility, involving all team members, collaborators, and clients from the beginning. There is always something to learn about, and collaboration achieves the best final result, therefore, GRAS firmly believes in circularity and holistic processes, incorporating the best professionals from each field into our projects.

About us

GRAS Reynés Arquitectos was founded in 2007 by architect Guillermo Reynés. In 2016, Álvaro Pérez joined as a partner, and architect Elena Gil became an associate in 2024. Based in Palma de Mallorca, GRAS primarily undertakes projects in Mallorca, Spain, though it has an increasing global presence with ongoing projects in various countries.

More than 20 architects and designers from diverse nationalities work on projects in a holistic, collaborative, and multidisciplinary environment, aiming to find the best solution for each project. This approach results in a wide variety of projects across all programmes and scales.

Examples of large-scale urban projects include Gomila Mallorca, the acclaimed and award-winning urban rehabilitation project in Palma de Mallorca completed in 2022, and Montecorvo Ecocity in La Rioja in 2008, one of the office’s first projects and a visionary 100% sustainable ecological neighbourhood. About another significant project is Cap Adriano, a residential complex featuring 9 villas and 10 unique apartments on the seafront, which has become a benchmark for premium residences on the island.

Providing a new vision for tourist architecture, about one of the main markets in the Balearic Islands, is one of the office’s priorities. The studio has recently developed notable hotel projects such as Son Bunyola, the first Virgin Limited Edition project in Spain, a comprehensive restoration of a listed building in the Tramuntana mountains, and the Kimpton Aysla Mallorca Hotel, a unique complex combining a hotel and a members’ club. Other notable tourist projects include the award-winning Hotel Bohemia in Gran Canaria, the Hotel Gecko, and hotel complexes for the Iberostar chain in Ibiza and Tenerife. This hospitality vision is complemented internationally with projects like Casa Camper Berlin and Casa Camper Istanbul, along with the renovation and expansion of the Kasbah Tamadot Hotel for Virgin Limited Edition in Morocco. These diverse tourism projects range from the restoration of small historic buildings to the conception of large hotel complexes.

Restoration is central to our work, having completed several heritage restoration projects such as the residential building Pont i Vic, the members’ club “Lalia”, the “Can Serra” residences, and the Cultural Heritage projects “Son Valentí” and “Es Rafal”, both large estates in the Tramuntana mountains (a UNESCO World Heritage site).

GRAS’ work is complemented by commercial projects such as Stone Clubhouse, a golf clubhouse, or Tennis Terraces, a tennis club that hosts the only ATP tournament on natural grass in southern Europe, as well as private residential projects of all scales: real estate developments like Vista Alegre, MRA Apartments, or Son Quint and unique private villas such as the iconic Where Eagles Dare, “The Mountain Collection”, two homes atop a hill in Palma de Mallorca, Kubik Extension or the “Little Blue” home, the office’s first private single-family project in the British Virgin Islands.

GRAS’s work has been recognised, exhibited, and published globally, receiving numerous awards and nominations.

About in 2012, the Montecorvo Ecocity urban-scale project was exhibited at the International Biennial of Sustainable Architecture in Barcelona (Spain) and, in 2016, the studio was invited to participate at that year’s Venice Architecture Biennale. Another notable exhibition was held in 2020, following participation in Public Architecture – Future for Europe at the Shchusev State Museum of Architecture in Moscow, Russia.

With private-level projects, GRAS Reynés Arquitectos highlights the American Architecture Prize awarded in New York in 2017 for the Where Eagles Dare project, which won at the best international residential architecture category.

Internationally, in 2023, GRAS Reynés Arquitectos was honoured for its architecture and interior design project, Kimpton Aysla Hotel, with the European Design Et Al and SBID International Design and Architecture awards. In Berlin, Germany, they won first place in the Excellent Architecture and Interior Architecture categories at the German Design Award with the Café Camaleón project, designed in collaboration with MVRDV and German architect Laura V. Rave.

Nationally, in 2023, GRAS won the NAN Architecture Award for the best architectural project in the multi-family housing category with Las Fabri-Casas of Gomila Mallorca project.

In 2024, the studio received the international Idea-Tops award for the Gomila project for the best residential and cultural architectural design worldwide in Shenzhen (China). This same project was shorlisted for Archdaily’s “Building of the Year 2024” award and won the K-P-A.Design The Kunpeng Global Design Award 2024 in Shenzhen (China) in the urban design category. This project was also selected for the CSCAE Architecture awards’ first phase.

Guillermo Reynés, founding partner, was recognised with the 40 under 40 award in 2017 as one of the most outstanding architects of his generation and regularly lectures on GRAS’ work at various events and academic institutions such as the IAAC, the Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, the CEU, the Architecture League of New York, and recently at the NEOM sessions at the 2023 Venice Biennale.
