GRAS Arquitectos receives 3rd place with Tangram Theatre in China

01/03/2012

On this occasion GRAS Reynés Arquitectos has been awarded 3rd place in the competition for a theatre in the city of Zhangjiagang, China.

With the intention of offering the city a new identity, GRAS Reynés Arquitectos intends to provide the city with a new urban icon, an element that gives the city distinction and personality.

The solution used by GRAS is a Theatre inspired by the Tangram, a traditional Chinese puzzle made of a square divided into seven pieces. The shape of the building, based on the geometry of the game, reflects within its geometry a crucial characteristic of the soul of the programme that houses the building: the figurative theatrical representation. Form and function have an intimate and clear conceptual relationship.

The building consists of a clear representation of the Tangram where each part of the program is part of one of the pieces. The building stands on a natural base that houses the parking and service areas. A natural path through this base gives access to the building, where due to its elevation a beautiful panoramic view of the surroundings is achieved. From that level on, all the different parts of the buildings come together to form the Tangram.
