How does the proposal contribute to improving the conditions for NTNU activities?
Improving the conditions of NTNU's activities begins by providing each activity with an appropriate space that is committed to the context in which it finds itself.
Today, Trondheim is known for its university, its culture and its various festivals. Therefore, there are activities around the city, activities around the university and ephemeral activities that temporarily occupy part of the city and the university. The challenge in this project is to activate the university and its activities as a point of reference and attraction for the inhabitants of Trondheim, for its visitors and for the new temporary inhabitants. It also has the ambition to be a claim for national and international institutions.
Given that an important part of the city of Trondheim is occupied by NTNU, we propose the total integration of the campus into the city and the city into the campus, reaching a symbiosis through urban synergy.
In this way, the NTNU's activities are developed within the dynamic flows of the city, achieving a seamless connection along the way.
Intentions and strategy.
The intention of STUDENT COLONIZATION is based on densifying the territory with a local language, but, in this case, adapted to the new requirements.
We have divided the program into two parts: the solid institution and the mutable services (which we consider to be, in addition, the most likely to experience growth in a few years).
The solid institution: they are the KAM, the Mental Centre and the Innovation Centre. Exclusive and reference institutions and, therefore, well identified in a specific location.
The mutable services : are the student residence and the sports circuits. And this is the strong and interesting point of the project.
We divide student residences over and over again and create micro-residences. We bring the classic block of residence building to the scale of the buildings in Trondheim. On the one hand, this strategy allows us to integrate these micro-constructions with the identity of the context, respecting the environment and its general image ; on the other hand, it allows us to colonize the context, closing the blocks that have been left open and occupying the spaces that the other buildings allow us, with them we obtain blocks in which student residences are mixed with family dwellings, reaching this global coexistence between the university and the city ; and, on the other hand, it generates progressive growth patterns without losing the identity or the potential of the concept, if not quite the opposite.
Following the same strategy, sports circuits are also intensifying. We seek to occupy all the traces to flow through the entire environment. Starting from the existing sports lines in the city and the existing sports lines in the university, we created a system that, in addition to linking them, filters them through all the campus routes. In this way we have also fragmented the sports facilities and distributed them throughout the territory.
Relationship with the environment.
One of the main problems of connection between the campus and the city has been caused by the difference in level between the two. The difference between the campus and the city is up to 20 metres. Following our concept, we have also colonised and occupied this space, so that we have managed to connect all the tracks through terraces formed by the student residences and the sports circuits.
Mobility on and off campus.
Apart from this system of sport circulation, we have also planned other mobility systems: giving more importance to public transport and without forgetting the private vehicle.
Public transport is very important in the proposal and responds to our communication nodes. These nodes function as an interaction centre between the different users, as well as micro-changes, as they can contain (depending on the situation): bus stop, bicycle parking, bicycles for public use, car parking at heights and the exercise circuit stretching park. They are covered nodes that also function as a meeting point.
Opportunities for future growth and development.
In itself, this is a growth strategy. Maintain the current identity to continue growing. So the simple fact of following its development in the future is part of the idiosyncrasy of the project.
